It has been a great end to 2019 and great start to 2020 for the Hillie winter sports teams.
The Haverhill wrestling team picked up where it left off last season when it finished undefeated and captured a Merrimack Valley Conference (MVC) title. The Hillies opened the year with a second place finish at the prestigious Ashland Invitational tournament. The team then won its first three dual meets to extend its winning streak to 31 straight matches. The Hillies travel to Tewksbury on Wednesday.
The Hillie gymnasts are also building off their success from last year. The defending MVC champs are off to a 2-1 start with wins over North Andover and Andover. The team will host Tewksbury at the Haverhill YMCA on Wednesday.
The Haverhill-Pentucket-North Andover (HPNA) girls’ hockey team is currently ranked as one of the top teams in the state. The Hillies picked up a 4-1 win at home over Westford Academy on Saturday to extend its unbeaten record to 5-0-1. The squad will host Acton Boxboro on Wednesday at 7:00 PM then travel to Methuen on Saturday for a big MVC matchup.
They boys’ hockey team is off to its best start in over a decade, winning three of its first five games. The Hillies captured the title in the 2019 Hillie Christmas Tournament, the first title in its own tournament since 2015. Haverhill returns home Wednesday night to host Lowell at 7:00 PM.
Both indoor track teams have had a strong run through the bulk of the season, having traveled to Boston for numerous meets so far. They will travel to Boston University on Thursday afternoon for a two important meets. The boys’ team will face Billerica for the MVC Division 2 Championship. The girls’ will take on Methuen. Both teams will travel to the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Saturday for the MSTCA Invitational.
They boys’ swim team record sits at 2-1 with early wins over Pinkerton and North Andover. The Hillies will host Burlington on Tuesday at the Charles C. White Pool.
They boys’ basketball team is 4-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Hillies won two games in the Lowell Catholic Holiday Tournament before falling in the championship game to Lowell. Haverhill travels to Lawrence on Tuesday then hosts Central Catholic on Friday night with tipoff set for 7:00 PM.
The girls’ basketball team picked up an MVC win over Lawrence on Sunday to even its record at 3-3. The Hillies will be home to take on Billerica on Tuesday night before traveling to Central Catholic on Friday night.
